The services of a parenting coordinator are engaged by parents who have a parenting agreement or parenting order in place, but need help making it work for their family. A parent coordinator assists the parents and the children by focussing on what is in the best interests of the children and will work with them to resolve disagreements and issues by consensus. If that is not possible, the parenting coordinator can make a decision for the family that is in the best interests of the children. These decisions are called “determinations” and have the force of court orders. Having a parenting coordinator reduces the need for parents to resolve disputes by taking them to court, which is time-consuming and expensive, both financially and emotionally. A parenting coordinator will also assist the family to learn skills that will help them to deal with disagreements so that they no longer need his or her services.
